1994 Honda Magna starting problem - please help.

Hello, I have a 1994 Honda Magna VF750C. It is in very good condition and has 32K miles on it. Recently at a traffic light I had switched off the engine (to save gas) because that particular signal takes a long time and I was the first one on the line when it turned red so I knew it was going to be a wait. I do that quite often. I usually put it in neutral, switch off the engine. Put it back in gear. When the cross street lights turn yellow, I switch the key on, pull in the clutch and start it up and go. This time around the starter quit. Just failed to start. I would intermittently hear the starter relay clicking but no juice. Over all the cars honking I rolled the bike to the side and turned right on the cross street which luckily had a slope. I let it roll and after it picked up speed I released the clutch and the engine fired up. Now this problem persists. It just wont start with the starter. I have the Honda Magna service manual and I tried to troubleshoot the issue but have had no luck. Basically they have suggested to check the electrical connections i.e. from the battery onwards through the relay switch, and the starter. I can hear the relay switch give a harsh clicking sound. The starter would not turn. The manual said, connect the starter directly to the battery positive terminal and the motor should turn. Nope. Did not happen. So I figured the starter was gone. I removed the starter and opened it, cleaned the insides (lot of carbon dust), put it back together and before installing it back into the bike, I just connected it directly to the battery. I had read around on other posts elsewhere that the starter should jerk around and basically the motor should turn pretty much violently. Well I am not sure if it was violent or not but the motor did turn quickly and fast. I figured the starter is not the issue. So now what is. Where do I look. Please help. Have been off the bike for more than 3 weeks now. It is just too painful.
